기간을 나타내는 개념들 : duration, preriod, term 외

 

 

1. duration + event / state

 

ex) The school was used as a hospital / for the duration of the war
= The school was used as a hospital duing the war
=> 어떤 특정한 사건이나 상황이 지속되는 기간 (during + 사건, 상황으로 대체 가능)

 

 

2. period = a length of time (general)

 

ex) The South African years were his most creative period.
= The South African years were his most creative time
=> 가장 일반적인 '시간의 길이'의 단위 (time 으로 대체 가능)

 

 

3. term =  a period of time that ..... (specific)

 

ex) Many students now have paid employment during (the) term
= Many students now have paid employment during the semester
=> period보다 구체적인 시간 (time that ...으로 대체 가능)

 

 

 

 

* stretch : a preriod of time (기간 자체보다는 지속성 강조)

ex) They worked in four-hour stretches.
ex) He would study for eight to ten hours at a stretch.

 

 

- * at a stretch : at a breath, at once, = straight, in a row

ex) He spoke for three hours at a stretch[straight].
ex) I worked for six hours without a break[at a stretch]
ex) It has rained for five days running[straight; in a row; at a stretch].

 

 

 

* spell = a short period of time during weather or activity occurs.

ex) There has been a long spell of dry weather (날씨)
ex) You join a barrister for two six-month spells of practical experience (활동)

 

 

* span = the period of time that ...

ex) The batteries had a life span of six hours [life span = 수명]
ex) His ability to absorb information was astonishing, but his concentration span was short
    [concentration span 집중 기간]

2. period = 가장 일반적인 시간의 단위
3. term = 구체적인 period
4. stretch -> at a stretch (지속성)
5. spell + 날씨, 활동
