* 집합명사의 종류

 

1. Family형
: committee, family, audience, staff, attendance, class, company, nation

 

집합명사 : my family is large (한 덩어리로 보자)
군집명사 :  my family (members) are all very well  (가족 구성원 하나 하나로 보자)

 

 

 

* wildlife

 

단수취급 : ex) A lot of wildlife is losing its natural habitat.
복수취급 : ex) There are towering waterfalls, wild plants and lots of wildlife
             [waterfalls, wild plants 복수,  그래서 lots of wildlife 로 복수]

 

 

2. the police 형
: police, jury, peasantry, nobility, clergy, gentry
  반드시 the + N, 복수명사의 의미

 

ex) The police were stationed inside the gate

 

* wildlife

ex) From now on, we will take a ride on this jeep and enjoy seeing the wildlife
    ( the + wildlife 가능)

 

 

3. cattle형
   : cattle, people (사람들)
    아무것도 안 붙임

 

 

ex) cattle lives on the grass

 

 

단) the people은 사람들이 아닌 국민의 의미임
ex) the people of Aisa

 

 

* wildlife

 

ex) The woodlands are teeming with wildlife.
    (the 안 붙임)

1. 단수, 복수 다 가능
2. the 붙일 수 있음
3. the 안 붙이기도 함

 

 

[result]

 

 

wildlife를 어느 한 형에 가두지 말자  (wildlife는 자유 명사다!)
단, 호응하는 명사들에는 영향을 받는다.

 

 

ex) A herd (of elephants, monkeys and other wildlife) / stampede across a series of wide, open plains. (elephants, monkeys - 주변 호응 명사들이 복수 그러므로 복수로 쓰임 - other 수식 받음)

 

ex)  wildlife was killed just for sport. [단독으로 나와서 단수 역할]
