Someday's question (언젠가는 받게 될 질문) - trip, pass, check

 


오늘부터는 'Someday's question (언젠가는 받게 될 질문)'이란 title로
많이 쓰이지만 생소할 지 모를 단어들을
예를 통해 정리하는 시간을 가져 볼 예정입니다.

 


1. trip :


1) The meaning you've alredy known. (잘 아는 의미)

 

 

- N. a journey
ex) We went on a trip to the mountains. (go on a trip)
ex) They took a trip down the river. (take a trip down = go down)

 


- V. 발을 헛디디다.
ex) Someone will trip over that cable. (Vi. trip over)
ex) As I passed, he stuck out a leg and tried to trip me up. (Vt. trip sb up)
ex) She said goodbye and tripped off along the road. (trip off = walk, run. dance ..)

 


* trip up = make a mistake / make sb make a mistake
ex) Read the questions carefully, because the examiners sometimes try to trip you up

 

 

 

2) The meaning you may not know. (잘 모를 지도 모르는 의미) :

 

 

 

 

- V. 스위치를 작동시키다.
ex) Any intruders will trip the alarm. (Vt. trip + O)

 

 

 

 

2. pass

 

 

1) The meaning you've alredy known. (잘 아는 의미) :

 

 

- V. move (지나가다, 통과하다. / 지나가게 하다)
ex) There was a truck behind that was trying to pass me. (Vi)
ex) He passed the rope around the post three times to secure it. (Vt)
ex) They waited for the storm to pass. (finish)

 


- V. give (건네주다)
ex) Pass me over that book. (pass over)
ex) Why do they keep passing back to the goalie? (pass to)

 


- V. 넘어가다. 양도되다. / 넘겨주다
ex) On his death, the title passed to his eldest son.
ex) Pass the book on to me when you've finished with it. (pass on)

 


- v. 넘다
ex) Unemployment has now passed the three million mark.
ex) It passes belief that she could do such a thing. (it can't be believed)

 


- V. change (change A into B)
ex) She had passed from childhood to early womanhood (pass from a to B)

 


- V. 흐르다
ex) We grew more anxious with every passing day

 


- V. 보내다
ex) We sang songs to pass the time.

 


- v. 통과하다 / 통과 (합격)시키다.
ex) I'm not really expecting to pass first time.
ex) The examiners passed all the candidates
ex) The bill was passed by 360 votes to 280.
ex) I don't like it, but I'll let it pass.
ex) ‘What's the capital of Peru?' ‘I'll have to pass on that one
ex) Thanks. I'm going to pass on dessert, if you don't mind.

- ex) They'll never be friends again after all that has passed between them

 


* pass out = faint
* pass away = die

ex) She got a pass in French. (get a pass)

- v. Pass sth up = refuse (give up)
ex) Imagine passing up an offer like that!

 

 


- vi. pass off
ex) The demonstration passed off peacefully. [be done, be achieved)

 

 

 

 

- N. stage in a process (단계)
ex) In the first pass all the addresses are loaded into the database.

 

 

 

3. check

 

 

1) The meaning you've alredy known. (잘 아는 의미) :


 


- v. examine / make sure
ex) Check your work before handing it in.
ex) Go and check (that) I've locked the windows.

 


- v. check sth out 대출받다
ex) The book has been checked out in your name.

 


- N. examination
ex) Could you give the tyres a check? (give + I.O + D.O)

 


- N. A pattern of squares, (체크 무늬)
ex) Do you prefer checks or stripes?

 


- N. attacking your opponent's king. (장군 in chess)
ex) There, you're in check.

- v. control
