lurk

Middle English: perhaps from lower (scowl)+ the frequentative suffix -k (as in talk ). The noun is from British slang lurk ‘method of fraud’.

(of a person or animal) be or remain hidden so as to wait in ambush for someone or something.

"a ruthless killer still lurked in the darkness"

* scowl : an angry or bad-tempered expression.

"lower the brows, as in anger or displeasure, put on a frowning look," c. 1400, scoulen, probably from a Scandinavian source (compare Norwegian skule "look furtively, squint, look embarrassed," Danish skule "to scowl, cast down the eyes"). According to Klein's sources, this is probably related to Old English sceolh "wry, oblique," Old High German scelah "curved," German scheel "squint-eyed;" from a PIE root *sqel- "crooked, curved, bent." Related: Scowled; scowling; scowlingly.

"Mum scowled at him and refused to say anything."

rummage

late 15th century: from Old French arrumage, from arrumer ‘stow (in a hold)’, from Middle Dutch ruim ‘room’. In early use the word referred to the arranging of items such as casks in the hold of a ship, giving rise (early 17th century) to the verb sense ‘make a search of (a vessel’).
